The structure is designed and build by the founder of the sculpture park, Mark di Suvero, who use this as a shade and open workshop. This giant structure is build off with many I-beams and it is movable to anywhere in the park. The large white curtain can be pulled up to block sun and rain when weather is extreme. |

The structure is moved to the corner of the park, because a park is an urban-getaway for the city people, especially in a busy city such as New York City, therefore, I want the structure to keep a low-profile, as much isolate from the industrial element as possible. The Administrative and Maintenance Office and restrooms are together, separate from the Mark de Suvero structure, which is modified into a open kitchen with indoor and outdoor seating areas as well as a vegetable garden (those long rectangular garden fields).
The original Mark de Suvero structure is very informal, same as the open kitchen concept, therefore I try to modify the structure with the respect of its originality and informality. I add two glass walls on two sides and take off the roof, in order to create an extension roofline for additional structure, the indoor seating area.
I wish to have the structure to engage with nature as much as possible. Not only the two sides of the structure are glass, I also want a clear skylight. Therefore I made a large blinds for the giant skylight with electric control for different time of day.
The extension to the exterior can be directly related to the veggie garden, where most of the food is made from. The garden did take sun's path into consideration. The taller plants will be planted closer to the outdoor seating area, and the shorter plants will grow in the front, so it wouldn't cast as much shadow to other plants.
My idea of open kitchen is to create an opportunity for people to meet people; it is a catalyst that cause families and strangers to interact and further collaborate. I design the L shape kitchen counter and sort the cooking process into few steps: Prepping(cleaning and sorting out the food at the place where the sinks are placed on the counter) and Working(cutting and other additional works that don't need sinks). Also, a simple shelves is placed overhead easy to reach.
What the open kitchen is different from other regular kitchen is that the cooking process is not happening in the kitchen, but in the seating area. After food is all prep and ready to go, one can bring the supply to the eating table, and cook at the table with his family and friends, and maybe new friends meet at the park!
The idea of stove on dining table is inspired by Chinese Hot Pot or fondu, and I raise the table to the same height as the kitchen counter and change the chair to bar stool, so people can easily reach for the stove in the center.
Moreover, I put a line of dish washing sink on the side in the original structure, because unlike other regular restaurants or kitchens, I want the people to clean after themselves, do their own dishes. Also, being the one who have to dump the food and do the dishes themselves, I hope this will build a good habit for them not to waste the food they cooked.
I wish that this way can create more interaction between different people, including families, friends, children, and local artists.
